Pancakes are a crowd pleaser for breakfast, but are often high in phosphorus additives making them a problematic choice for people living with kidney disease. In this recipe, we use pancake mix and syrup that contains no phosphorus additives to make these kidney friendly pancakes.

Kidney friendly pancakes ingredients:
- Pancake Mix – be sure to choose a kidney friendly pancake mix. The vast majority of pancake mixes on the market contain phosphorus additives. Note that some kidney friendly pancake mixes may contain more sodium, so keep that in mind when making this recipe and using the nutrition information.
- Pancake Syrup – much like pancake mixes, you have to be careful of phosphorus additives with pancake syrup. Be sure to choose one with no added phosphates. This particular syrup is low in sugar and high in fiber (weird, I know, but I’m not complaining!).
- Eggs and Oil – these were called for in the pancake mix. Follow your box mix instructions. Some may only need to add water!
- Water – not shown in the picture above, but our boxed mix gave us the option of using milk or water. We chose water since it is lower in protein.
A kidney diet that limits or avoids phosphorus additives and keeps sodium less than 2300 mg per day is recommended.
