A typical spicy mayonnaise relies heavily on sodium to add some of the “spicy” taste to it. Our low sodium mayo gets it’s flavor from a small amount of sriracha sauce plus a generous amount of sodium-free spices. My sauce (and sodium!) loving husband has enthusiastically given this his stamp of approval.

Low Sodium Spicy Mayo Ingredients:
- Mayo – one of the keys to making this recipe ideal for people with Chronic Kidney Disease is to buy a regular mayonnaise – not low fat or light! Typically when manufacturers remove fat, they add in salt and sugar – and we do not need more salt! But we do need the calories from the fat, so get the good stuff! Be sure to read the ingredients labels to make sure there is no added PHOS. It isn’t common in mayo, but there are several that have it added in. - Sour Cream – I like using sour cream in recipes because it is a very low sodium food that is also low in potassium and high in fat. The sour cream as a little twang to the sauce while also helping to offset the sodium in the sriracha sauce.
- Sriracha – Sriracha is technically a high sodium food since it has zero calories per teaspoon, but quite a lot of sodium. Fortunately, a little goes a long way. We are making a half a cup of sauce in this recipe, but only using one teaspoon of sriracha!
- Mrs. Dash Extra Spicy – I love this pice blend. If you enjoy spicy foods, then you need to get some of this. Using bold seasonings like this one really do allow you to cut down on your sodium without sacrificing flavor.

- Did I mention adding it to vegetables??
A kidney diet that limits or avoids phosphorus additives and keeps sodium less than 2300 mg per day is recommended.
